Environmental / Public Health Section

The Section is responsible for the following Services:

WATER QUALITY MONITORING AND SANITATION SERVICES

Water sampling, conducted daily and testing for residual chlorine and monthly for bacteriological analysis. Once per quarter, samples are sent to an accredited laboratory. Wastewater quality monitoring for effluent is done quarterly and samples sent to an accredited laboratory. Disinfection with High Titre Hypochlorite (HTH) is applied for disinfecting flowing sewer in cases of sewer blockages and where repairs have been undertaken.

PREMISES INSPECTION

Premises inspections are done for licensing, routine monitoring and as follow ups to public complaints or where there is a special need.

PEST AND VECTOR CONTROL

Indoor residual spraying ( IRS ) is done for Mosquito control and residents pay $5-00 per room. Larviciding is also done in breeding sites to reduce mosquito populations. Life threatening bees is a major challenge and are destroyed by spraying, where life is threatened.

FOOD QUALITY CONTROL.

Inspection of foodstuffs in shops for open date labeling and spoilage. Training and screening of food handlers Food and food standards regulations enforcement.

CONTROL OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Courier services is provided in the form of a motorcycle and a bicycle to transport sputum specimens for Tuberculosis, dried Blood Smears and CD4 samples for HIV, to Chegutu District Hospital laboratory in the TB and HIV collaborative activities. A motorcycle was dedicated to the Section from Ministry of Health and Child Care, for TB and HIV collaborative activities. Disease investigations of diarrhea diseases to ascertain the source of infections and carries out appropriate action to control and prevent the outbreaks. The Section conducts Health and Hygiene education in communities and institutions. Training of school health clubs facilitators and facilitating the formation of community health clubs. Training of health promoters in communities to increase coverage on awareness raising.

CLEANSING SERVICES: PUBLIC TOILETS

The section is responsible for cleaning and maintaining of public toilets.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Green masters waste recovery community based organisation continued to collect plastics and paper. They are now also collecting PET containers for super Chibuku which were posing a menace. Clean up campaigns are done monthly with volunteers, business community, faith based organisations and community based organisations. The section does not directly supervise waste but it is involved in software activities such as advising the engineering department on issues pertaining to waste management and working closely with Environmental Management Agency to mitigate the impact of waste on the environment.

POLLUTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL.

The Section enforces the provisions of the Environmental Management Act chapter 20:27 in an effort to prevent pollution in the town.
